Linux for Playstation 2 in US, UK and AU

Talk about anything and everything not related to this site or the Dreamcast, such as news stories, political discussion, or anything else. If there's not a forum for it, it belongs in here. Also, be warned that personal insults, threats, and spamming will not be tolerated.

Will you buy a ps2 linux kit should they come out in your country?

well if its released on the net then that'll be great but if sony dosent then... i guess they will. its a first from sony, producing something that they MUST release the source fo runless they found a loophole and figured out how to use another license or to not release it, then it'll suck. but if it comes out im not going to buy it, id rather set up a pc with linux, it would be much better. as for speed i believe sony woldnt release it if it was really slow... linux on pc is a much more sensible thing. more useful, one could make progs for ps2 on their comp provided the tools were avalible like tyhey are for dreamcast. either way i think its a waste of money.
Its been a while...

i don't think you understand... if it's "linux" then they absolutely MUST release the source code. no two ways about it. the have a certain amount of time left before it's necessary to have the source code publicly available. else they are gonna get in huge legal trouble (that not even the best lawyers can get them out of ... since the GPL is probably the soundest legal document ever).

they could debate that they are giveing linux for free, you pay for the hardware and they give you linux for free. and since the ps2 doesn't normally play cdr's without a mod chip and there fighting to keep mod chip makers out of bisnuess

Just to update you on this, the same friend who sent the original notice to me sent me this follow-up email which I received today. It's long, but if this interests you, it's worth the time to read it. Enjoy!

Subject: [ps2linux-announce] Linux (for Playstation 2) pre-orders [North America]

Dear PlayStation and Linux Enthusiast,

Now is the time to put yourself inside the next generation in computer
entertainment! In response to your request for information on LINUX (FOR
PLAYSTATION 2), we are excited to let you know that this accessory is now
available for pre-order in the United States and Canada* exclusively at
http://www.us.playstation.com/?refUrl=linux, with an expected shipping date
of May 22, 2002.

http://www.us.playstation.com/product_d ... fUrl=linux

Combining the incredible technology of the PlayStation(R)2 computer
entertainment system
(http://www.us.playstation.com/product_d ... fUrl=linux)
with the endlessly versatile Linux operating system (http://www.linux.org),
Linux enthusiasts and programmers can now use the same system they play
their favorite PlayStation games on to run thousands of Linux applications!
The LINUX (FOR PLAYSTATION 2) accessory kit allows you to utilize the
PlayStation 2 console as a fully-functional desktop computer. Download a
wealth of Linux programs -- HTML editors, multimedia players, office
solutions and more -- or program your own software to run in the
PlayStation 2 Linux environment.

Included with the LINUX (FOR PLAYSTATION 2) kit is the PlayStation 2 Linux
software, an internal hard disc drive (40 GB), a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet
Network Adaptor, and a USB mouse and keyboard. You will still need to
purchase or supply a PlayStation 2 console, a 8MB memory card (for
PlayStation 2) [preferably a new memory card -- once formatted for Linux
use, your game data will be erased and you will not be able to save new
game data] and a VGA monitor with sync-on-green capability [check your
monitor's user manual to see if it meets this requirement].

While it's exciting to see tremendous interest in this new PlayStation
venture, there are a few things for you to note before purchasing. LINUX
(FOR PLAYSTATION 2) is a tool for Linux enthusiasts and programming
hobbyists. Basic understanding of the Linux operating system is strongly
suggested for installation and use. Also, be advised that this accessory
will NOT enhance your PlayStation 2 games. The hard disc drive formatted
for Linux cannot be used with HDD-compatible PlayStation 2 games, and the
included Network Adaptor (Ethernet) does not include a modem, which the
upcoming standard Network Adaptor will. Be sure to consider all of these
factors before making your decision to purchase.

official PlayStation 2 Linux Community site FAQ at :

Once you're ready to immerse yourself into the Linux world via the
PlayStation 2 system, click in and pre-order exclusively from
PlayStation.com. While supplies last.

Hmmm. How much do monitors cost these days? I always thought monitors were expensive, so It would be kind of hard to have one unless you had a computer. But, it's good that they let you use real linux apps. Window managers anyone?

Strange, I thought the video signal from the PS2 sync'ed at 15Khz and thus was incompatible with VGA monitors (which require a 31Khz signal)?
As much as the linux kit looks interesting it still has to prove how useful it will be, heh
