Approx power consumption:

(obtained with multimeter, they might not be very accurate!)

--In 'sleep' mode:
1.2mW

--On, but 'idle'
1.5mW

--On, 'busy'
5mW

I don't know the average capacity of drycell AAA batteries so I can't help. Sorry

You know man, I would do sooo much to get my hands on rechargeable lithium cells to run my VMU on, especially since the little suckers drain power even when they are not active.

Annoying thing with VMU:
It uses power to run the clock, but the battery runs dead in a few months. In my dad's digital camera, it still has the original CR2032 powering its clock and the camera was purchased years ago!

woah woah woah.........wait a sec. the vmu drains power even when its not on!!?

WTF WERE U THINKING SEGA.

fux rechargable batteries........i would be happy with just an ac wall powered vmu......then i guess a couple more people that bill gates could afford to actually play a vmu like a gameboy. (or at least as long as a gameboy)

i use the headphone jack from an old pc cdrom , it was small enough
to fit inside the vmu.

(Uncheck the 'Disable BBCode in this post' at the bottom - I think you can turn this function on permanantly within your profile)

Cool mod btw

Yeah pkscary, even when you hit sleep the VMU still drains a little power from its battery. That would explain why if you left a VMU game by pressing sleep you can recover the game next time you switch the VMU on.

:sigh: why couldn't the VMU be energy efficient? The realtime clock is the only real demand for power when it's normally switched off, I think.

i post this mod a few week ago on this board

it's very easy to do
just wire up your positve and negative lead from the vmu
to your input voltage plug (mine is a headphone jack)
(green SONY plug from walkman or discman is perfect)
they are stereo but it doesn't matter.

I have this mod half-done to one of my VMUs, I am currently waiting and trying to find an appropriate socket for the VMU.

If all else fails I was gonna buy one of the old bulky gameboys for parts (they are about ?9 used or something).. do you think the AC socket from this would be too big to fit in the VMU?

EDIT: I'll take a look around to see what I can obtain from work tomorrow, if I can get my hands on a pocket gameboy the socket from that one would be quite small; though I am considering ripping one from a mastersystem (cos they are stupidly cheap and I already chopped up the PCB from one)

Do you have a Gamebit screwdriver? If you don't you're screwed because Nintendo made it so you can't open the Gameboys unless you have it.

You could always take the Incredible Hulks' queue and

:!:   ~SMASH~  :!:

Or you could pick up one of those bulky yellow tape players and take the power thingy from one of those. That's what im doing, as I sure as hell aren't taking it out of my minidisk player.

this is the type of adaptor i use

here's a description of it

input : 110/220V 60/50Hz
power : 5W
output : 4.5V
current : DC 300 mA

it does work perfect

(one more thing the tip on the plug is the positive lead)

i have a clear green VMU and a green SONY plug
the 2 together match perfectly

!! WARNING !!
do not attempt to plug a wall adaptor (4.5 Volt) and battery cell (CR-2032)
at the same time , you could BLOW your VMU

u can see 3 arrows on each side of the circuit , starting from the top
it indicate a small round copper trace , u can hook a wire there
the next arrow, the middle one show that u can unscrew and put a wire there , and the last one is the same as the first arrows

picture two show the place where to put the plug

picture three show what it look like when a plug is fit
this picture is half done
