Any slower RPM fan that you can fit in there will alleviate fan noise. But some DCs have noisy GD-ROMs, and there isn't a ton you can do to quiet those up.

Not so terribly long ago, 40mm fans were common on CPU heatsinks. However, you can still get they new, no need to buy used parts. Is there a UK-specific equivalent to pricewatch/pricegrabber? You're going to want something fairly low RPM or it'll be a screamer. If you want something really small and...

What kind of computer is this? Pre socket 5? A slim install of Windows should be fast enough for those kinds of applications. I've run WinXP on rather outdated boxes, and with a little tweaking it was great. The biggest reason a WinXP box becomes slow, unresponsive, and hoggy, is all the OTHER crap ...

I'm sure you could squeeze in a 40mm. But it wouldn't be a direct replacement in many DCs - it would require you to do something about the fan detection/feedback/whatever. Might be as simple as a resistor, but I don't know anyone that has tried that method.

But I'd sooner buy an SP before I bought an afterburner this late in the game. I personally prefer the original GBA's form. Also I prefer having more control over the battery options, as well as a pot to adjust brightness. But that's just me, and I could always get a stupid DS for that kind of shap...

Then again, batteries - rechargeable, magical, etc., they all die eventually. So far. You can always replace it if you care. Of course, if it clicks once and only once, it's probably the starter solenoid. Which of course is starter mounted and with the brilliant Northstar engine requires you to remo...

Heat pipes? Like an exhaust system or something? Heatpipes . Useful when you have limited space in one spot but want to move that heat to another location where you have more space, and then maybe pull the heat off of that new location. That's what they did in the early designs of the DC, they move...

They are still available on occasion. If you've got the money, you could pick up a used SP or a premodded afterburner GBA. If you don't, it comes down to hunting down afterburners or halos.

Since you already have the faceplate, raijin, you might as well start bidding on a kit. :P

I've got an ancient dremel in the toolbox. Still works great, I need to buy more cutting wheels for it though. I used it to modify some steel mounting brackets on my previous car, at high RPMs its not bad. Just don't slip...

You can probably still find an Afterburner kit or two on ebay - although most of them say "afterburner" but are really selling Halo lights. The alternative, is course, the Halo light. It is inferior and adds bulk, but it probably beats all the other frontlight solutions. You can probably s...

Don't use a Thompson drive or any parts from one, unless you get them for free. Those are the ones that tend to fail and develop disc reading errors.

Most boxes ask which device you want to boot from, even if only ever so briefly. But you could always change the settings in the BIOS after it reboots so it doesn't boot from the CD the second time around. Not that it should matter, because you should be able to pop the disc out and boot from the HD...

When I said there weren't any settings, I was saying it was all pretty much auto, not much left for tinkering with. I can't manually specify anything related to the hard discs. As for Dell, they don't have much useful to say, but having a master and a slave on an old-school IDE channel is THE standa...

Dude you're getting a Dell! (Dimension 2400)

So my dad picked up a used Dell Dimension 2400, with a 2.66Ghz P4, shitty onboard video, weak everything basically. Well one thing lead to another and most of the components are no longer Dell. But I was just curious, because in my work on it, I came across an interesting issue. I could not get it t...

I've found that for stuff that isn't picky, I've gotten lazy enough to use crimp connectors now and again. But a regular 15w iron is all I need for most soldering work. If I ever have to do anything bigger, I'll get a dual setting iron.

The only one I ever thought was a photoshop was the XDCX, the others all looked fine. But I'd only ever seen the "original" XDCX pic before, which looks really, REALLY fake. Like they'd taken a pic of a black DC and cut a chunk out of a pic of an xbox and shoved them together. Not even pho...
