Help me rebuild a Playstation collection!

Post by Jeeba Jabba »

So, on August 28th, 2005, I had somewhere around 15 game systems and a few hundred games in my possession. The next day, as 15 feet of water entered my house, I had none. Since then, I've re-bought a Dreamcast and a somewhat decent library for it; An Xbox 360 and a formidable library for that.

But just recently I got the bug for the Playstation and rebuilding my former library. I purchased an original Playstation for $20. Within the past week I've acquired some great finds...

Final Fantasy 7 - Original Black Label version. Mint condition entirely. Great find for only $45.

Final Fantasy Anthology - Still sealed. $25.

Metal Gear Solid - Good condition. Black label. $25

I also have the original tall-box version of Resident Evil that somehow landed its way into my car when I evacuated. There were a few others as well. Really nice ones too, such as Nights into Dreams, still sealed, big box version including the 3D Saturn controller. But as times got tough shortly after, they didn't survive the cash-in at a game-trading store.

On their way, via the mail, I have Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy 8. My next targets are Legend of Mana and possibly Star Ocean.

What other suggestions do you guys have? It's been a long time and I'm not entirely remembering those days all too well. I'm interested in all genres, but mainly RPGs.

Star Ocean 2 was a lot of fun, as far as RPGs go. You can get it for around $20ish IIRC. Twisted Metal 2 is one of the best games of ANY type on the system.

Revelations: Persona was a good one. I didn't get too far in it since I was pretty young when I had it, wasn't too used to RPGs yet, and hadn't learned not to run from every random battle. I still hear it's a top notch game though, and it's about to be remade for the PSP.

Legend of Dragoon and WIld Arms are supposed to be superb RPGs as well, though I haven't played enough of them to decide for myself.

other personal recommendations:

Silent Hill (the start of the greatest survival horror franchise of all time)
anything with Resident Evil in the title except for Dead Aim
Metal Gear Solid
Tomba
Gex 2 and 3 (if you like 3D platformers and don't mind camera issues anyway. 2 and 3 are still some of my favorite platformers to date)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2
the Spyro games
the Crash Bandicoot games (including Crash Team Racing, excluding Crash Bash)
One (very underrated action platformer)
Vigilante 8 (better than Twisted Metal 2 IMO. The XBLA version does the game no justice.)
Mega Man 8 (my favorite Mega Man game, despite Mega Man sounding like a girl)
Parappa The Rapper and Umjammer Lammy if you like rhythm games, though they really show their age nowdays with rhythm games all around us

dude totally sucks. I have to say, I make fun of my friend tony for having Insurance on his game collection, but yikes. Perhaps I should put my dreamcast collection on a higher shelf of my bookshelf lol.

Ape Escape (the only good one in the series, imo)
Crash Bandicoot 1-3 (and the first Spyro)
Megaman X3-X6 (they're decent and inexpensive)
Silent Hill
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Parappa the Rapper
Tony Hawk 1/2 (just avoid THPS3, it's like a censored downgraded version of the actual game)

What are you saying!?!

Anyways, games from the 3-D shift have not aged very gracefully (gameplaywise and graphic-wise), but if that's what you're going for-- do it.

I didn't really care for anything on the PSX, I just really wanted to post to say do NOT ever try Bubsy 3D. Do nooooooot.

The graphics for the RPGs on the system are totally painless. It's with most of the other genres that I can see Mulletman's point with.

Oh, and Nico, it's kind of pointless when you have a one-floor home. :P I put most of it in the attic and it wasn't nearly high enough.

Thanks for the great suggestions guys (except for Bubsy 3D of course)! Keep 'em coming.

It really depends on the games. The chunky and colourful look of platformers worked really well with the PS1's limited 3D, but anything that tried to look realistic looks awful now. The Spyro trilogy were probably y favourite platformers. It's a damn shame the genre seems to have died.

Klonoa
I never played the ps2 one (ps2 can't read disc and it doesn't work with hdloader), but the ps1 klonoa is absolutely amazing. If you love platformers give it ago.

You might as well pick up Final Fantasy Chronicles and Chrono Cross as well.

I'd agree with you, except that I enjoyed them much more on the Sega CD than on the Playstation.

I had both Lunar 1 and 2 in their big box editions... :( The first one was great. Never got around to the second. Never played Alundra.

If you liked the first Lunar game a lot, you'll probably love Lunar 2. In my opinion, the second one was much better than the first. Also, its one of those games where it does help a bit to have played the first one before the second (sadly, when I played them originally on the Sega CD, I had gotten the second before the first).

If you can somehow get a hold of them for a decent price, get them -- they're worth it, even if they did screw with the story of both between the Sega CD and the Playstation versions...

I don't remember the second being particularly more difficult, other than the last boss of the epilogue being a bit painful since you only get to fight it with one character (but if you've been leveling up normally throughout the game, its not a problem).

The magic experience system tended to get in the way at the worst of times, but that's just because I had the tendency to upgrade my magics, and not pay attention to how much I needed to save... I don't even remember if they kept that system in place for the Playstation version or not... In fact, I don't really remember all that much about the Playstation version of Lunar 2...
